Quantifying Residual Muscle Imbalances in a Collegiate Soccer Athlete with a Second ACL Injury
Can Muscle Imbalances Persist After Clearance to Play?
This case study follows a collegiate soccer player who returned to play after ACL reconstruction, only to experience a second ACL tear six months later. Despite passing functional testing, a Springbok scan revealed imbalances from the original injury that were not identified through standard assessments.
The analysis showed smaller quadriceps and hamstring muscles on the previously injured side, compensatory hypertrophy in the gluteus maximus, and a pattern of uneven development between upper and lower muscle groups.
